Clarice Staf (nee Hassel) passed away peacefully at the Kelvington Hospital on December 28, 2020 at 3:22 a.m. with her son Ragnar and her niece Blanche Hrycak by her side.
Clarice was born on November 10, 1918 to Edwin and Anna Hassel at home on the homestead three miles south of Rose Valley, SK by mid-wife Malla (Rustad) Minge, age 76. Clarice always called herself “The Peace Baby” as she was born one day before the end of World War I.
Clarice and Jonas met at a New Year’s Eve dance; they both loved to dance and were great dancers. They were married on January 1, 1938 by Pastor Undahl in the house where Irvin Braaten now resides, just west of Rose Valley, SK.
Clarice worked hard on the farm, alongside Jonas, picking roots, milking cows, baking, cooking, even cooking for two different thresh crews at the same time – Clarice’s dad’s crew ate at 11:00 a.m. and Jonas and Clarice’s crew ate at 1:00 p.m. in Clarice’s very small kitchen. Emily Rotzien was Clarice’s good helper! Clarice raised her youngest sister Norma, age 6, and niece Lilly, age 4, for a few years in the late 1940’s.
Clarice and Jonas lived on the farm for 46 years until Jonas passed away on September 5, 1984. Clarice moved to Rose Valley in July of 1985 and bought the house from Gordon and Emily Wheeler in the old school yard where Ragnar started school in 1949.
Clarice enjoyed town life after all the “hard work on the farm”. She enjoyed her small house, yard, garden, flowers and many friends and good neighbours; going for a two mile walk at 6:00 a.m. with friends, supper with friends and playing cards and visiting until 2:00 a.m.
Clarice joined the Bethel Lutheran Church in 1947 and was Secretary until they disbanded a few years later. She joined the Rose Valley Zion Lutheran Church Ladies Aide, Rose Valley Seniors Club, and the Robinsdale Good Will Club when she moved to Rose Valley. She enjoyed gardening, picking berries, canning, knitting, and making afghans.
Clarice was predeceased by her husband Jonas (1984), parents Edwin (1955) and Anna (1940), brothers Irwin (1979), Palmer (1988), Norman (1962), Adolph (1987) and Dewaine (2013), sisters Loyla Roberts (1992) and Norma Stevenson (2013), parents-in-law Lars Staf (1988) and Margaret Staf (1918), sisters-in-law Margaret Hassel (1970) and Norma Hassel (1977), brothers-in-law Hank Roberts (1975), Joe Zaplitney (1983) and Jim Stevenson (2016) as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews in Canada and the U.S.A. She is survived by her son Ragnar of Rose Valley, SK, sister Gladys Zaplitney of Okanagan Falls, B.C., sisters-in-law Mavis Hassel of Saskatoon, SK and Mavis Hassel of Flin Flon, MB, special Home Care Niece Blanche Hrycak and husband Bill of Humboldt, SK and numerous nieces, nephews, and special friends.
A hard life well lived,
always thinking of others before herself.
A good, devoted wife, mother, sister,
aunt and good friend to many!
Clarice will be sorely missed by many,
especially by her son Ragnar, Blanche and Bill, Brian, Samantha, and family.
God Bless Your Soul
