In Loving Memory of
Dora Hope
A celebration of Dora's life will be held at a later date.
Dora was born to Gus and Minnie Olson on July 1, 1924. She grew up on a farm near Kuroki, SK with three brothers and six sisters. She often spoke of her days attending Rosa School and riding horseback. After graduating high school, she obtained her teaching certificate and received her first teaching position at Rosa School.
Dora married Elmer Hope on July 17, 1947 and they settled on a farm near Nut Mountain, SK. She then accepted an offer to teach at nearby Glengariff School all the while working alongside Elmer on the farm. They had seven children. She continued teaching until the late 50’s. In later years, she loved attending the Glengariff reunions where she would connect with students and community.
Dora was blessed with many talents including knitting, upholstery, and gardening. Grandchildren were extra special to her, and she would make time to attend graduations and activities. She loved visiting and would always have a pot of coffee on the stove along with her delicious cakes and buns. Her Nanaimo bars were a favourite.
Dora’s music followed her for a lifetime. She told us that she learned piano and accordion by ear and at thirteen she started playing barn dances with her brothers, Harvey and Fred, where they were paid 50 cents a night. Later Ollie would join the band. There was always wonderful music at family gatherings and Dora continued to entertain until age 96.
Dora also enjoyed watching curling, playing Canasta and Bingo with friends at Weneeda, but her special pastime was Scrabble.
Dora was predeceased by her husband Elmer; granddaughter Sarah Johnson; son-in-law Brent Walker; great-grand-daughter Jolayne Mary Berezuik; parents Gus and Minnie Olson; brothers George and Fred; sisters Louise, Edna, Helen, Emma and Hilda; sisters-in-law Doris Olson, Alice Olson and Connie Olson; brothers-in-law Bert Holsten, Freddie Eyre, Larry Ginn, Lindal Hallgrimson, Bill Brown, and Malcolm McLean.
