Nut Mountain Lutheran Church
Elwin Bjerland was born on May 25, 1930 in Kelvington Hospital to Ole and Anna Bjerland. He was the sixth and final child and came late in life to his parents, being 17 years younger than the second youngest child. Elwin was a lifetime member of the Nut Lake Lutheran Church, and acted as Fireman for as long as we can remember. His love for God and his dedication to the Nut Lake Church will always be remembered. Seldom did Elwin miss going to Church on Sunday, and his favorite hymns were the old ones, even if he didn't sing along! He attended school at West Shore School. Upon completing his education, he chose to farm, and has lived all of his life on the Bjerland homestead. Elwin was a true farmer. His love of the land and livestock was evident in his daily life. Ever a good neighbor, he was often the first person people called when they needed a hand, especially with a difficulty in calving or a sick cow. Elwin saw it all over the year, having started out life with horses to do all of the farm work to seeing the world progress to modern machinery. He often told stories of the "Good Old Days" and they included his horses, thrashing, hunting and of course cutting ice in the lake for the ice house! Life seemed much similar then. Elwin married Helen Plante on June 9, 1950. They were blessed with 5 children: Karen (Murray), Kim (Val), Robert (Carol), Diane (Garry), Connie (Byron) and 16 grandchildren: Jeffrey, Jarrod, Chelsea (Dylan), Lacey (JJ), Adelida (Trevor), Megan, Tabitha, Adam, Brittany, Ryan, Ciara, Heather, Andrea, Clayton, Cole and Josette. Elwin got a great deal of enjoyment from children, and there always seemed to be some around. He was so excited to be a grandfather, and once he got his first grandchild it wasn't often that you saw him without a little one sitting on his knee. He was especially blessed to have his grandchildren live close by, so he spent a great deal of time with them over the years. Once Elwin retired, he enjoyed going to the races and had a route that he followed each year. He was an avid card player and played regularly in the winter months. He always enjoyed visiting with his friends at the races and during the card games. He was predeceased by his father Ole, mother Anna, siblings (and siblings-in-law) Thorben Bjerland (Helga), Selmar Bjerland (Marvel), Sybil Braaten (Arva), Juliet Petersen (Carl), Orlo Bjerland (Emma), Larry Plante, Raymond Plante, Annette (Fred) Schappert, Pat Pearson, Joan Plante. Elwin went home on April 17, 2015. He was raised in his house, was married in his house and went to the Lord in his house. Elwin, your wishes were fulfilled. He will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by his wife Helen, his children, his grandchildren, brother-in-law Dennis Plante, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. You will forever be in our hearts.
