Effie passed into the eternal presence of the Lord and Saviour on August 29 following continuing deteriorating health.
She is survived by Jack, her husband of 64 years; two sons, Rod (Carol) of White Rock, B.C. and Don (Carol) of Saskatoon; six grandchildren, Corey (Jayme), Evan, Shannon (Evan), Scott, Tim and Carly. She also leaves to cherish her memory a sister, Merle Hanchuk and brother-in-law, Sid White of Wadena and sister-in-law Ann Colville of Edmonton.
Effie was predeceased by her parents, Irving and Mary Hastings and siblings, Herbert and Blanche.
Effie was born in Wadena on July 21, 1928. Ironically, she was born in the same hospital with the same attending physician as her first son Rod. She grew up in the rural area east of Wadena. She followed her calling and went into hospital work in early adulthood and basically remained doing that until she retired in 1989.
Effie’s lifetime goal was focusing on the eternal prize awaiting her in heaven. At the time of her passing, she was the longest-standing member of the Wadena Baptist Church. On earth she maintained a constant interest in other people, especially her direct family. She often said in recent years that she would have the best sleep of her life if both sons, daughters-in-law and grandchildren were able to sleep under the same roof for just one night,
Another passion of Effie’s was the board game Scrabble. She enjoyed this as often as she could convince Scrabble buddies Terri, Marge, Pat and Lilyan to join her for a game. They never really played the strict rules of the game, but they all enjoyed the rules they played.
Effie was also a person who never tired of being on the phone. In recent years when mailing a letter for Christmas became more expensive than phoning, she would personally phone everyone on her mailing list. We are sure that some of the people she called in the USA had to think deep to remember who was calling! It was even said that she called someone, got the wrong number and still had a 30-minute conversation!
Effie could be summed up as a local person whom everyone knew and everyone liked. Those who knew her would say, “How could you not like her?”
Finally, a heartfelt thank you to all who contributed to Effie’s life in any way. Let it be known that you were always cherished by her.
Any donations in Effie’s name can be made directly to the charity of one’s choice.
