Elizabeth "Fern" Nicholls (nee Austin) was born on October 17, 1926 in Kerrobert, Saskatchewan. She went to be with the Lord on Monday, August 31, 2020 following a short illness. Her parents farmed during the "dirty thirties" and also spent some years in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Mom`s family moved to Port Arthur, Ontario during the war years. Mom graduated as a registered nurse from Port Arthur General Hospital in 1948. She nursed on and off during the years she raised her family, including several years at the Haileybury Hospital. She married Bob Nicholls in 1950 in Niagara Falls, Ontario. They were blessed with five children. They lived in Abitibi Canyon (Ontario Hydro) from 1952 to 1965 and Haileybury, Ontario from 1965 to 2006. She was widowed young, in 1987, and spent the next 33 years involved in her community and church, as well as being grandma to eight grandchildren. She was a strong believer in volunteerism, serving on many committees, service clubs, Bible studies, and church choirs. She helped, mentored and counselled many of her fellowmen and women along the way.
In 2006 Elizabeth made the big move (at age 80) back to Saskatchewan to be closer to the western part of the family (which now included four of her five children). She continued to be a wonderful grandma and now great grandma as 15 great grandchildren came along. She had the same impact on the community of Foam Lake, Saskatchewan as she had had everywhere she ever lived. She was independent, feisty, determined, and energetic; very much a people person! She was also kind, compassionate, generous and loving and always looked out for the underdog. She died before we were ready for her to go but did so with dignity and without complaint.
She was predeceased by her parents Percy and Violet Austin, sisters Helen (Clare) Campbell, Hazel (Randall) Perry, Reba (James) Gilchrist and brother Bob. She was also predeceased by her son-in-law Jim Rogers, and nephews Robert Perry and Ian Austin.
She is lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her sons Tom (Karen), and Bob (Kristine), and daughters Ann, Shelley and Valerie (Paul) Flahr. Also, by her grandchildren Jennifer (Colin), Jeffrey (Melissa), Sara (Dusty), Emma (Jim), Scott (Angela), Erik (Krysta), Virginia (Evan) and Thomas and her great grandchildren Gabbi, Colten, Cooper, Reese, Judah, Mercy, Atirah, Eliyah, Malachi, Amos, Lilly, Stella, Claire, Henrik, and Ella-Jane.
We will meet again!
