Elmer was born on December 13, 1923, to John and Margaret (Friesen) Shirley near Frontier, Saskatchewan. He was the fourth of seven children.
The family moved to Kelvington in 1923.
Elmer lost his mother when he was five years old. His sister Gwen then helped raise him and the other children.
Elmer enlisted in the Army on July 5, 1941, and served in England, Belgium, Holland, France and Germany. He was discharged in July 1945.
On August 5, 1949, he married Louise Mildenberger at Marean Lake. They raised five children: Valerie (1950), Jim (1953), Judi (1954), Laurie (1959) and Gerry (1961).
Elmer started farming in 1952 in the Farmingdale District, clearing the land and establishing the home and farm that is still proudly run by his son Jim. Louise passed away in 1991. A few years later Elmer married Ida Moss.
Elmer loved FARMING right up until the end. His other pleasures included his family life, friends, reading and dancing. He took great pleasure in his cattle and always said, "Grab on to their tails and hold on. They'll get you through anything." Whether walking around his corrals and pasture or driving the countryside - it's where he always wanted to be.
Elmer passed away peacefully in the Kelvington Hospital surrounded by his family.
We hope there are bumper crops where you are. We love you.
Elmer leaves to celebrate his life with great memories and pride, his children, Valerie (George), Jim, Judi, Laurie and Gerry; along with his nine grandchildren. He was also "Big Papa" to three great-grandchildren and one on the way.
