Elva Jean Lindal

July 22, 1939 — December 2, 2024

Elva was born, a beautiful red-haired baby, on July 22, 1939 to Frank and Anna (Nupdal) Park. Her younger sister, Lorna was born on May 10, 1941 and they became a family of four. Tragedy struck the family in 1943 when Anna passed away due to complication from thyroid surgery. Frank married Mary Ellen (Nellie) Hutchinson when Elva was six. Nellie was a wonderful, loving mother to both Elva and Lorna, and eventually to the six children Nellie and Frank were blessed with during their marriage.

Being the eldest, Elva worked hard on the farm. She was a caregiver all of her life, starting with her seven siblings. Elva graduated from Wynyard Composite High School in 1957. Her first job was as a babysitter for a family in Regina. She married Gunnar Lindal on December 31, 1959, and they were married for nearly 55 years. They had three children: Jody, Wayne, and Keith. Elva loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren fiercely, and she cherished each one of the them. They in turn cherish the memories of their time at the farm spent with Amma/Langamma and Afi.

Elva was an extremely hard worker with a huge vegetable garden and raspberry and strawberry patches. Off the farm, Elva worked at the Mozart Coop as well. When she wasn’t working on the farm, she loved spending time at Fishing Lake, especially for swimming lessons. She always had a cabin full of kids for lessons. Elva loved sports. She was an accomplished ball player and taught many children the basics of the game. She was a proud and vocal supporter of her husband when he played goal for the Wynyard Monarchs, and continued to be involved with the organization as her sons, son-in-law, and grandsons played or coached with the Monarchs. The Lindals sponsored the Lindal Award for the Most Dedicated Player, and Elva proudly presented that award for many years. Being dedicated to family, Elva was a very loving mother who never missed any of the kids’ sporting events, later attending many of her grandchildren and even great-grandchildren’s activities.

A proud descendant of Icelandic and Scottish heritage, Elva kept the cultural traditions alive with food and customs. She took the trip of a lifetime to Scotland and England in 1998 with some of her sisters. Elva was also a loyal community supporter. She organized Christmas Concerts, 1st Day of Summer Dances, and many other events at the Mozart Hall where she was also caretaker. Elva served on the Leslie Beach Co-op Board, Mozart Hall Board, and Wynyard and District Recreation Board.

Elva passed away in the early morning of December 2, 2024 at Golden Acres in Wynyard. She went to join the angels with family by her side.

Elva was predeceased by her parents: Anna, Frank, and Nellie Park. Her beloved husband Gunnar Lindal passed away on December 3, 2014, just short of their 55th wedding anniversary. Sister Penny Baker and brother-in-law Bob Baker, daughter-in-law Carla Lindal, brother-in-law Alvin Zulak, and nephew Greg Zulak.

She is survived and will be missed dearly by her children Jody (Doug) Jordan, Wayne (Rebecca) Lindal, and Keith (Shari) Lindal; grandchildren Steve Zulak, Tessa Jordan, Meryl (Tim) Swinburnson, Tayler (Allie) Jordan, Aaron Lindal, Tyson (Tara) Lindal, Dana (Scott) Sigfusson, Kara Lindal, Dalton Lindal, Allie Lindal, and Lila Lindal; her great-grandchildren Joss, Magnum, and Madden Swinburnson; Leighton, Brenner, and Linnie Jordan; Dryden and Korsyn Lindal; Sawyer, Holden, and Aspen Sigfusson; siblings Lorna (Ed) Weldon, Heather Ivey, Margaret Zulak, Sheila (Dave) Thornton, Gilbert Park, and Wilma Park; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and extended family and friends.

A commemoration of Elva’s life will be held in May 2025.
