Emily Popik

January 14, 1928 — May 4, 2022

Emily Popik of Foam Lake, SK, passed away on Wednesday, May 4, 2022 at the Foam Lake Jubilee Long Term Care Home, at the age of 94.

She was born on January 14, 1928, eldest child of Alex Salapak and Alice (Tatiana) Wasylyshyn. She grew up on the farm in the West Bend area attending school at both Edmore and Coloraine schools (and yes the walks were 3 to 4 miles each way). When her Dad died unexpectedly, she left school early in grade 8 to help at home. She worked as a waitress while helping her mom raise her 7 younger brothers and sisters.

She met her future husband Mike Popik, who lived nearby and they were married July 28, 1946. They lived on the farm of Mike’s parents until his parents passed away.  Mike and Emily took over the farm and raised their 5 children there until 1976 when they moved to West Bend. After Mike passed away in 2000, Emily moved to Foam Lake where she resided since.

Emily always kept herself busy and worked very hard at everything she did. She could outlast younger people anytime. We think she even outlasted her body. No person or thing could keep up to her. She was very active and believed that staying active and busy was key to staying young and healthy. She loved to read and to learn something new every day. She was a dedicated homemaker, loving mother of 5, grandmother of 9 and great grandmother to 7, and an active member of Model Farm church for many years. She only learned to crochet one pattern but each grandchild of hers received one of her large homemade blankets.

She loved to garden and always had a large garden, if not 2 gardens. She only gave that up about 3 years ago. People would see her out on her garden in her back yard, with her walker by her side. She had a witty sense of humour that popped up unexpectedly sometimes. Emily preserved fruits and vegetables of every kind. At one point, she had 4 freezers and they were all full of food that she made. She was a wonderful cook and everyone especially loved her perogies, her pickles and jams and cabbage rolls and bread and buns and pies and many many more delicious foods that she cooked and baked. In recent years, Kinsmen radio bingo was her Saturday night entertainment every week.

Emily was pre-deceased by her husband, Mike in 2000, her infant son John, her parents Alex and Alice, her sisters Olga and Sophie, and her brothers Victor, John and Myron.

Emily leaves great memories behind with her 5 children: son Emil, son Bill and his 3 children Lisa (and Andrew O’Reilly), Kristine (and Bryce Doell) and son Ryan, her son Henry (and Carol) and their 2 children, Louise and her daughter Alysa, son Michael (and Crystal) and their daughter Korina and sons Mason, Chase and Bentley, her daughter Pauline (and Paul Relkey) and their 2 children Brendan and Kristen (and Tanner Edwards) and their son Cash and daughter Hazel, son Myron (and Cathy) and their 2 children, son Kolton and daughter Richelle. Also Emily’s two sisters, Mary Woitas and Pauline Wolitski, her sister in law Nellie Tekatch and many friends and relatives.

Enjoy Heaven Mom. We will watch your candy.
