Freida Matilda Heistad was born on August 26, 1930, to Hannes and Olga (Ziola) Wick. She was the youngest of three children. Freida lost her mother at a young age. Hannes, Freida’s father, later married Nellie Zarowney. Freida grew up on the family farm by Fishing Lake along with her older siblings, Alice and Adolph, as well as her younger sisters, Serena, Agnes, Dianne and Jeanette and younger brothers, Carl and John. Later, after Hannes passed away, Nellie married Alfred Olson and another sister, Vivian, was born.
Freida attended Edfield School and Fishing Lake School.
After Quinton Heistad returned home from serving overseas, he started “courting” Freida. They were wed on November 5, 1949, and farmed in the Fishing Lake area. They shared their companionship for over 60 years. Their son, Ron, was born on June 12, 1954.
Freida was blessed with two grandchildren, Jeff in 1986 and Stacey in 1989 after Ron married Lorna in 1979. Freida thought the world of her family and enjoyed having them just across the road.
Freida took great pride in everything she did – her gardening, yard work, homemaking, delicious meals and baking, as well as her outdoor chores with the farm animals. She enjoyed curling, bowling, ice fishing, playing cards, and music with family and friends. She enjoyed summer trips to fairs and fall trips to Agribition.
Freida was predeceased by her parents, Hannes and Olga; husband Quinton; brothers, Adolph and John; sisters, Alice, Serena and Dianne.
She will be lovingly remembered by son Ron (Lorna); grandchildren, Jeff and Stacey (Kevin); stepmom Nellie Olson; sisters, Agnes (Joe) Swedja, Jeanette (Dave) Witzko and Vivian Olson; brother Carl (Loretta) Wick; sisters- and brothers-in-law; neices and nephews; as well as cousins.
