Gladys Emma Jane Prouse was born to Oliver and Ruth (Erickson) Prouse at Loverna, Saskatchewan on February 4, 1927. She passed away on October 1, 2023 at the age of 96.
Gladys grew up in a family of twelve children, ten girls and two boys, and learned at an early age to work hard on the farm near Hill Peak School where her teacher, Mr. Harold Miller, left a lifetime impression on her and spurred her on to become a teacher. On July 14, 1950 Gladys married Roy Hendren and they had four children. Her home was always bustling with housework, gardening, cooking and baking. Everyone who visited appreciated that they would have a place to stay and a lovely home-cooked meal. Once her children were older, she went back to teaching, from the multi-grade schoolhouses when she first started, to substitute teaching in Kelvington. She also spent much time cooking at Roy's gravel camps. She found great joy in her grandchildren, then great-grandchildren as they came along.
Gladys was predeceased by her parents, Oliver and Ruth, her husband Roy, his parents Pat and Esther, sisters Beatrice Keyes, Myrtle Wagner and Connie Gustus and brother Oliver, brothers-in-law Ivor Robinson, Ray Keyes, Ernie Gwilliam, Bob Minor, Florian Wagner, Ronnie Wagner, Art Cade, Willie Halbert, Bob Bristow, Dave Still and sisters-in-law Mary Cade, Bev Hendren, Donalda Hendren and Verna Hendren.
She is survived by her children Keith (Shirley Byers) Hendren, Julie (Fred) Liljelund, Patsy (Alvin) Drummond, and Polly (Bob) Schindel and grand- and great-grandchildren Michael (Alison; Owen & Olivia) Liljelund, Tyson (Marni; Indiana & Wylie) Drummond, Cody (Meriah; Eysa, Sophie, Elowen & Gus) Drummond, Morgan (Lana Rae; Lyra, Rory & Nash) Drummond, Dustin (Jessica Welder) Drummond, Stephanie (Jesse: Madelyn, Ayden & Liam) Bastain, Meissa (Ezra, Tygra, Farrah, Jorah) Schindel, Bobbie (Dustin; Jonnie, Tel) Crawford, sisters Violet Robinson, Ruth Gwilliam, Dorothy Minor, Edna Wagner, Isabelle (Morris) McClement, Nadine (Dale) Swindells and brother Russel (Lorraine) Prouse and many other relatives and friends.
Gladys will be remembered for her amazing hospitality, her lifelong love of teaching, for her organizational skills and diary-writing, and for her deep love of family.
