Helen Plante was born on August 4, 1929 in Tisdale, Saskatchewan. She was the second of seven children born to Thomas and Albina Plante.
Helen’s parents had farmed in the Naicam area, and decided to relocate to the Archewill area in the early 1930’s. When asked about her childhood, she would tell how her home was in the caboose of an old train, with additions around it, about the games the kids used to play on the hill and little stories of childhood fun. Helen enjoyed skating in the winter and playing ball in the summer. Her father was severely hurt while hauling gravel and passed away from his injuries when she was 12 years old. The family was kept together through lots of hard work and perseverance.
Helen took all of her grade school education at the Archerwill School, and attended the University of Saskatchewan to obtain her teaching degree in 1948. Helen taught at West Shore School in 1949. Over the years she has shared lots of entertaining stories about the children she taught and how things were in a one room school.
Helen and Elwin had met as teenagers and started seeing each other when she began teaching in the area. They were married on June 9, 1950 at the family farm. They were blessed with 5 children, 16 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren: Karen (Murray): Jeffrey & Jarrod; Kim (Val): Chelsea (Dylan, great-grandchild Berkley), Lacey (JJ, great-grandchild Eden), Adelida (Trevor, great-grandchild Barrett), Megan (Jonathon); Robert (Carol): Tabitha (Kyle), Adam, Brittany (Spencer), Ryan, Ciara; Diane (Garry): Heather, Andrea (Nathan), Clayton (Kate); Connie (Byron): Cole, Josette (Spencer, great-grandchild Tessa).
There was always lots of hard work to go around and Helen always had a large garden in the summer, as well as milking the cows and raising chickens. She was the Sunday School Leader at Nut Lake Church for many years and an active member of the Nut Lake Ladies Aides. She enjoyed having company over for visits and it seemed like the house was never empty! Her grandchildren loved to come and visit at Grandma’s and Grandpa’s. Grandma Helen was famous for her breakfast porridge, having tea with the grandkids while she told stories of her youth, and she always had a funny story to share about what the grandkids were up to when the parents came to pick them up!
Helen went home to the Lord on November 22, 2017. She was predeceased by her husband Elwin, father Thomas, mother Albina, siblings and sibling in-laws Lawrence Plante, Raymond Plante, Annette (Fred) Schappert, Pat Pearson, Jeanette Plante, Joan Plante, Thorben Bjerland (Helga), Selmar Bjerland (Marvel), Sybil Braaten (Arva), Juliet Peterson (Carl), Orlo Bjerland (Emma).
Helen will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by all who loved her. You will be forever in our hearts Mom, rest easy.
