Howard was born on July 1, 1927 to Albert Edmund Hope and Sadie (Julien) Hope at the Wadena Union Hospital. He had three brothers, Elmer, Pete and Art and two sisters, Joyce and Ruby before the passing of his dad a month and a half before Howard’s second birthday. His mom married Elmer Pengelly in 1930 and to this union, came another brother Leonard and a sister Marge.
Howard attended Glengariff School, having rheumatic fever and polio cost him two years before he quit school in grade 8. He then went on to work on various farms, for Elmer Hope, Alf Finnie and Wally Althouse to name a few. He spent several years going back and forth in the winters and staying a few summers as a ranch hand in Alberta with his brother Art. He made many life-long friends doing what he loved dearly, on the back of a horse.
Howard moved home and started farming on his own in the early 60’s, buying a farm from Frank Bielka, meeting Ruth Lauritsen and marrying her on July 5, 1963. To this union came two sons, Cecil on March 28, 1964 and Rory on November 8, 1965.
Kelvington was and always will be his favorite place in the world. He loved watching sports, especially the sports that had his kids or grandkids playing in them. He had a special seat at the rink that he spent hours in, beside Boyd Pladson, watching his own family or whoever else was playing. Going to the Kelvington Fair, watching the parade, ball, horse racing and drives in the fall to see the combines were also things very dear to his heart.
Howard and Ruth moved into Kelvington in 1999 due to Ruth’s fight with Alzheimer’s that eventually took her in October of 2005, only two years after Howard had open heart surgery in August of 2003. Not many days went by without Howard being by her side and that is what made him the special man we all knew and will remember.
Howard was predeceased by his parents Edmund and Sadie, brothers Elmer, Pete and Leonard, sisters Joyce and Ruby, sisters-in-law Kathie and Lil, brothers-in-law Doug Wann and Jim Headington and nephews Dwayne Hope and Dale Mumford.
Left to mourn his passing are his son Cecil and his children Colton (Becky) and Sarah (Branden); son Rory (Jo-Anne) and their children Tyler (Shira), Daniel (Tiffany) and Brett (Jasmine); great grandchildren Pearl, Eleanor, Kyson and Bria; brother Art, sister Marge; brothers-in-law Vic Mumford and Laust Lauritsen; sisters-in-law Betty Pengelly and Dora Hope and many nieces and nephews.
