Irene Sokochoff, aged 70, passed away peacefully surrounded by family in the Pasqua Hospital in Regina, Sask., in the early morning of February 15, 2018, after a short battle with cancer. She was born in Canora, Sask., on October 31, 1947, to John and Tina (Popoff) Zbitniff and was the second of five children.
She grew up and went to school in Buchanan, Sask. In her teens, Irene worked as a nanny for Dr. Allman’s family where she was able to travel the United States and spent a summer caring for his children in Houston, Texas. When Irene returned she moved to Wadena, Sask., to work as a waitress and cook at Mike’s on the Highway.
There she served Lawrence apple pie and coffee one afternoon and it was love at first sight. Irene and Lawrence were married on October 20, 1966, and resided on the Sokochoff family farm. Irene quickly made many lifelong friends in the community. She was a true farmer’s wife: tending to the animals she loved, milking cows, raising chickens, cooking and tending to her massive gardens.
One of Irene’s many joys in life was raising her children, Robert (Shauna), Kenny (Carmen), Dale (Tammy) and Jennifer (Nolan). Irene will be deeply missed by her many grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. When the children left home, Irene worked at the care home in Kuroki, Sask., for a couple years. Her love for caring for others and cooking led her to become a cook at the Weneeda Park Lodge for 15 years.
Irene and Lawrence resided at the farm until 2012, when they moved to town to enjoy their retirement. Irene enjoyed her time at the lake with family and friends, gardening and entertaining. Everyone who was lucky enough to taste her cooking knew it was done with love and you never left her home with a empty stomach or a empty heart.
Irene touched the hearts of everyone who knew her. She was a kind soul who always put others in front of herself. She will be very deeply missed by her family and friends.

Irene was predeceased by her beloved father John, mother Tina and brother Freddie.
