John Kostiuk was born on February 9, 1923 in Mykolaiv, Ukraine. He was the eldest son born to Peter and Mary Kostiuk. John immigrated to Canada in 1932 with his two siblings, Bill and Donna.
Shortly after arriving from Ukraine, John attended Royal Rock School where he and Bill learned English. School was not a problem for John – it was a breeze, no challenge at all. After completing his primary grades John went on to farm with his father and uncle John Sr. He had a long career in farming, working on the family farm for over 50 years.
John was an active member at St. Michael’s Parish, attending services and events. John helped with cutting grass and helped plan for the 75th Diamond Jubilee. He was also elected to be Treasurer and Secretary in 1986. John took pride in this role and enjoyed it as a pastime, holding the position until 2013.
Once John retired from farming, he remained active in the community. He spent his later years enjoying the outdoors, attending church and the company of his friends and family.
John passed away at the Golden Acres Nursing Home on March 3, 2019. He was predeceased by his parents Peter and Mary, his sister Donna, brothers Bill and Steve and sisters-in-law Mildred and Olga. He is survived by his sister Anne, brother-in-law Joe, many nieces and nephews and extended family members.
