On June 22, 1929, John immigrated to Canada with his parents, two brothers and three sisters from western Ukraine. He was five years old. They made their voyage to Quebec on a ship called the White Star. From there they travelled to Yorkton by train where they obtained a farm in Willowbrook, which they farmed during the Depression years. In 1941, John’s father bought land west of Nora.
On October 19, 1952, John married Sannie Kralka. To this union two children were born, Linda (Dwight) and Myron. John and Sannie farmed for 34 years before they retired to Rose Valley.
After a few years, they moved to Tisdale, then to Muenster. With failing health, John then moved to the care home in Humboldt, where he remained until he joined his wife Sannie at Pleasant View Care Home in Wadena. He remained at Pleasant View until his passing.
John will be sadly missed by his son Myron and daughter Linda (Dwight) Demmans; grandchildren, Callie (Ward) Third, Kristie (Shaunn) Mino, Jayden (Kelsey) Demmans, Jonathan Schurko, Lynn (Lonaven) Kohlen, Ashley (Cody) Prevost, Jamie Schurko;13 great-grandchildren; and his sister Nettie.
