It with great sadness that we announce the passing of Marie Smith (formerly of Wynyard) at St. Paul Lutheran Home in Melville, at the age of 101 years. The funeral service will be held at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Wynyard Saskatchewan at 1pm on Friday October 14th .
She was predeceased by her parents Hormidas and Clara Dupont, brothers Emmanual, and Nathaniel and sister Rose DeBruyne, her husband Leonard and daughter Ruth Stafford.
She is survived by her children Marlene Sagan (Benny), Allan Smith (Kathy), Lynn Smith (Joanne), Doreen Smith (Brian), Laurel Cozart (Curtis), 13 grandchildren ( Sheila Unruh, Charles (Buddy) Stafford, Shannon Schick (Doug), Kimberly Sagan (Aaron), Gary Sagan (Jackie), Terry Sagan (Crystal), Julia Smith (Ben), Pamela Grotkowski (Joel), Jennifer Wooster, Carol Wooster (Kyle Lafond), Colin Wooster, Adrien Cozart, and Darien Cozart), and 12 great grandchildren (Alexander Unruh. Sasha Unruh, Devin Schick, Sidney Schick, Parker Read, Spenser Read, Samantha Sagan, Garret Sagan, Rachel Moore, Medina Wooster Lizalovic, Bryson Lafond, and Dimitriy Grotkowski).
Marie was born in January 1921 in a farmhouse south of Wynyard Saskatchewan. She attended East Lynne School, which was 2 ½ miles away. At 16 years old, she went to work as domestic help for various families. In May 1942, she married Leonard Smith. Together they developed a successful farm and raised 6 children. There were many friends and family members, near and far, that she kept in regular touch with. She had a curious nature and was always looking for something new to learn about. She was creative and produced many beautiful ceramic pieces. Marie was active with the Catholic Women’s League and the Royal Canadian Legion. In later years, she worked for Sunny Land Poultry Products, the Wynyard Hospital and Homecare. She will be remembered as a hardworking, friendly, and kind person who had a love of animals and especially enjoyed watching hummingbirds.

The family wishes to acknowledge and thank Dr. Van Zyl, Pastor Dawn Myrfield, and the staff of St. Pauls Lutheran Home for the kind care Marie received while there.
