Mary Schultz, fondly known as “Baba” or “Wadena Baba” to her family, many friends, and nursing home staff, passed away peacefully on the evening of October 24, 2021 after a very short struggle with a cerebral vascular event. Family surrounded her during this difficult time.

Mary May Tataryn was born in the Ukraine – Horodenka Peedverbchi – on May 16, 1928 to Wasyl and Barbara Tataryn. She travelled by ship with her parents in 1929 to Canada. She often recounted the story of being able to walk when she left the Ukraine but after the many months on the ship with its motion she had to learn to walk all over again.

Mary lived with her parents and siblings on various farms in and around the Kuroki/Kylemore/Lintlaw area and in 1944 settled on a farm just to the west of Kuroki.

Mary Tataryn married Alex Schultz on June 11, 1949. They lived briefly in the Schultz homestead north of Kuroki before building a new home across the road. They raised five children: Nettie, Ken, Connie, Judy, and Dan. Mary worked diligently on the farm alongside her husband – milking cows, working in the fields, raising chickens and pigs as well as being an outstanding seamstress and exceptional cook. She never utilized a pattern and spent many hours at the treadle sewing machine creating and repairing clothes. She never used a recipe but would say about a cup of that and a little of this. However, her Sunday chicken dinner meals were extraordinaire and we as children, grandchildren and great grandchildren all have memories of her oh so delicious doohickeys, cherry tarts, and shortbread cookies.

In 1988, Mary and Alex moved to their new home in Wadena. Mary remained very involved with family gatherings, spending time with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and gardening. When Alex became unwell and passed away in 2006, Mary moved into Weneeda Park Lodge spending many enjoyable years with friends and her sister Anne.  They spent countless special hours visiting, creating puzzles, shuffle board, baking, bingo, and outings.

Related to a decline in her health, Mary move to Pleasantview Care Home in 2017 and celebrated her 90th birthday with many family in May of 2018 at the care home. Later in 2018 she moved Wynyard Golden Acres and quickly won the hearts of her care givers with her easygoing and positive manner.  You would often hear her singing “You are my Sunshine”. She will surely be missed by all those that had the privilege of knowing her.

Mary is survived by her children: daughter Nettie Nelson, Shari and Keith Lindal (Allie, Lila), Carla and Wayne Karakochuk (Jordan, Logan, and Jackson), Rhonda and Kevin Bzdel (Brooke and Kade); son Ken Schultz, Christie and Shelley, Kurtis and Lindsay (Lincoln and Everleigh); daughter Connie Wagner, Paul and Erin (Emery), Mark and Nicole (Christopher), Jeff and Kandace; daughter Judy and Roger Barthel, Brent and Kerri-Anne, Hiedi and Matt (Ben, Oliver and Ivy), Heather and Grant (Dawson and Burkley); son Dan and Trish Schultz, Carah and Nataliya, Alyssa and Travis (Luke and Ben), Landon and Stephanie. She will also be lovingly remembered by her sisters Anne Danyluk, Nellie (Stewart) Burton, Lucy Tataryn, two sisters-in-law both named Irene Schultz and many nieces and nephews. Welcoming Mary to heaven are her parents Wasyl and Barbara, husband Alex, sons-in-law Terry and Donald, brother Wasyl and his wife Sophie, father and mother-in law Herman and Augusta Schultz and eighteen of her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews.

Our sincere thanks to all those who cared for our Mom and Baba.
