Olga Schuman passed away peacefully with family by her side at Silver Heights Special Care Home, Raymore on January 8, 2015.
Olga was predeceased by her parents, George and Helen Bender; husband Walter Schuman in 1992; two infant sons, Raymond and Leonard; daughter Marlene Meenan and son-in-law Bernard Meenan in 2013; infant brother Arthur; brothers, Alex and Henry; and sister-in-law Ethel.
She is survived by her son Gerald (June) Schuman; daughter Dianne (Dale) Brownlee; grandchildren, Darla Meenan, Shawn Meenan (Loretta), Alana Ottenbreit (Jason), Jacquie Bondarchuk (Eric), Jarret Brownlee (Clara); great-grandchildren, Justin and Ryan Ottenbreit; Alana's mother Sharon Schuman; sister Anne Sands (Andrew); brothers, George Bender (Sylvia) and Art Bender (Valda); sister-in-law Darlene Bender; as well as by many nieces and nephews.
Olga was born in Riga, Latvia, to George and Helen Bender. At a young age she came to Canada with her parents and younger brother Alex to farm by Kandahar. Olga attended Product School. After having to leave school at a young age she worked at various places until she married Walter Schuman in 1941, moving to their farm northeast of Raymore. While on the farm she grew a huge garden; raised chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys; milked cows; and helped Walter with the binder (which caused some disagreements so we hear). She also worked at restaurants in Raymore.
Olga spent many hours in her flower gardens as this was one of her joys in life. She also enjoyed her animals especially the cats she rescued and took in. Olga loved playing cards, especially a good game of "Smear."
Upon Walter's death in 1992 she moved to the town of Raymore where she continued to grow beautiful flowers and feed the hummingbirds.
Olga took pride in the achievements of her children and grandchildren. The death of her daughter Marlene left a huge hole in her heart.
In June 2010, due to failing health, Olga moved to Silver Heights Special Care Home in Raymore where she resided until her death. She became quite fond of her caregivers and other staff and she was only too glad to tell them stories about how naughty Dianne was growing up.
The family would like to thank the staff at the facility for the excellent care Olga received during her years as a resident.
