Patrick Young

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Patrick Young, born on March 17, 1954, in Yellow Quill First Nation, Saskatchewan, who left us on October 11, 2024. He was predeceased by his beloved mother, Theresa Young; father, Fred Cheekinew; and siblings George, William, Jimmy, and Veronica Young. 

Patrick leaves behind a legacy of love and strength through his daughters Twyla Cote, Jennifer Pritchard (Jamie), and Charity Young (Danny Laplante), as well as his son Pascal Erasmus. He was a proud grandfather to Dante Desjarlais and Ariana Laplante. He is also survived by his brothers Mervin and Wayne Young, his special niece Shiela Tucker (Monty), and his best friend and travel companion, John Cuthand, along with many nieces, nephews, friends, and relatives who will remember him fondly.

From a young age, Patrick lived an independent life, becoming well-known across the prairies for his exceptional hockey skills. He received his BA of Indian Social Work at First Nations University in the early 90s and dedicated his career to the social work field, where he made a significant impact on the lives of many throughout his work - from Yellowknife. Patrick cherished his Anishinaabe culture and language, regularly attending ceremonies and embracing his heritage. Mino Pimatisiwin means living the good life, by following the 7 sacred teachings, which he did. He greeted each day with a smile, filling his life with joy through his love of pow wow music, daily walks, travel, and an unwavering zest for life. His enthusiasm for new experiences led him to say yes to every invitation, and he was renowned for his captivating storytelling.

A devoted father and grandfather, Patrick played a vital role in the lives of his children and grandchildren, imparting wisdom and love that will endure.

There is so much more to share about our dad, and we invite those who wish to honor his memory to leave messages and reflections, which we will read at his wake. Patrick will be deeply missed but forever remembered in our hearts.
