Sophia (Salapak) Rudniski was born April 7, 1929 on the family homestead north of West Bend, Saskatchewan. She was three and half pounds and the second of eight children born to Alex and Tatianna “Alice” (Wasilishen) Salapak.
Sophie attended Edmore school from grades 1 – 6, walking four miles one way, then to Colaraine School, three miles away, for grades 7 and 8. At age 16 her Dad died unexpectantly so she stayed home to help her Mother with the younger siblings. She also worked in the kitchen at Halyk’s Confectionary Store in West Bend, Ituna Café and as a hired girl for the owners of the General Store in West Bend. She later moved to Edmonton with a couple of neighbor friends and worked at various cafés waitressing and cleaning rooms in apartments. Over the years Sophie enjoyed crocheting, crosstitch, cooking, baking, berry picking, bowling, baseball and fishing.
Sophie came home to visit family and it was then that she met Emil through family friends. The two were married on July 10, 1965 and they had two children. Emil and Sophie built a life together on the family farm raising cattle, horses, pigs, chickens, grain farming, gardening and milking cows and shipping the cream.
Sophie baked homemade bread weekly and made the best pies – especially apple pie – made to perfection!
Sophie raised 50 – 100 chickens every year along with ducks and turkeys. Together with neighbor friend, Vera, they worked together to process the birds they raised. She also kept about 50 – 100 laying hens and sold eggs for many years.
Sophie took pride in having an immaculate garden with more than enough produce needed, especially her huge crop of potatoes which she shared with family, neighbors and friends.
Sophie was a faithful companion for Emil and joined him going on sleigh rides, wagon treks, rodeos and parades – packing delicious lunches!
She enjoyed visiting family and friends, playing Three-Spot, watching the Toronto Blue Jays, shopping and playing radio bingo.
Emil and Sophie’s four grandchildren were their pride and joy. They made every effort to attend school concerts, 4-H, music recitals and sporting events. More recently they were overjoyed to hold their first great granddaughter!
Sophie went to live in Golden Acres Nursing Home in Wynyard in January 2016 and was joined by her husband in June 2019 until his passing on August 3, 2019.
Sophie is survived by her son Randy; daughter Sandra (Perry); grandchildren Alyssa (Tony), Kelsey (Andrew), Jordan (Laura) and Brayden and great granddaughter Morwen. She is also survived by sisters Emily Popik, Pauline Wolitski, Mary Woitas; brother Myron Salapak; sister-in-law Eleanor Bohachik; brothers-in-law Eddie Rudniski, Conrad (Rita) Rodney, Vern (Doreen) Rudneski and numerous nephews and nieces.
