Torsten Kenneth Egge was born at Wadena, SK, on June 6, 1922, the fifth of eight children, to Ole and Karen (nee Carlson) Egge, who moved to Saskatchewan from Minnesota in 1917. They lived on a homestead near Kuroki, SK, until 1928. When Torsten was six years old the family moved to a new homestead four miles south of Nut Mountain. Torsten attended Glengariff School until Grade 11 and achieved his Grade 12 at Nut Mountain School, one of very few boys at that time to get his Grade 12.
He worked for a local farmer until joining up with the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1939 at the age of 17. He was stationed in Nova Scotia, England and, during the final stages of the war, was in Belgium and other European countries working as a radar technician for the Air Force. He was discharged at war's end in 1946 and returned to Canada, where he stayed in southern Ontario, working in a metal foundry and then for a farmer. After a few years he returned and purchased his own farm south of Nut Mountain.
A daughter, Ruth Marie Egge, was born to him on March 17, 1954. In 1958, he went to British Columbia seeking work. He worked in various sawmills. While in B.C., in a little church in Lumby, he met Jean Beatrice Mckenzie. They were married on December 17, 1960, in Vernon, B.C., where daughter Karen Joy Egge was born to them on April 11, 1962. They then moved to Red Deer, AB, where son, David Kenneth Egge was born on October 28, 1963. They returned to the farm in Saskatchewan in 1966. In 1973 Karen was lost in a drowning accident while on a school outing. In 1974 they sold the farm and moved one mile west and one mile north to another farm on a better road. They farmed there until 1987, Torsten also worked at various other jobs, such as concrete work and water hauling, as well as working for other farmers.
In 1987 they moved to Kelvington, leaving son David to run the farm. In 2007 they purchased the house and post office in Hyas, SK, and moved to their last home. In 2013 Torsten moved to the Norquay Lodge, where he resided until his passing on July 1, 2015.
Torsten was first of all a farmer. He enjoyed hard physical work, the freedom of the farm, going to auction sales and looking at the machinery, and just being active. He loved to read, and had a great deal of knowledge on a wide variety of subjects. He was a staunch member of the church, a good Bible teacher, and a dependable husband and father.
Torsten came to know the Lord at the age of 15 years, when his teacher at Glengariff gave a Bible tract to his sister. Torsten found the tract laying on the couch and in reading it he found his need of a Saviour. Though he did not have the opportunities to go on to Bible school or higher learning, he studied and grew in his faith, and through many battles, stumbles and triumphs, his desire and love for the Lord never wavered, and obeying the Lord was his lifelong desire. He had a great compassion for the poor, and would often do without things himself to give to missions and various charities.
Torsten was predeceased by his brothers, Alvin, Harold and Joseph; his sisters, Mabel, and Helen; and by his daughter Karen.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jean; brother Olaf (Eva) Egge; sister Beulah Johnson; daughter Ruth (David) Johnson and son David (Gayle) Egge; grandchildren, Margaret (Terry) Andrusiak, Karrie (Ryan) Johnson, Kevin Johnson; Elijah and Josiah Egge; and great-grandchildren, Brayden, Mikayla and Andrew Johnson.
