Victor Stephan Miller was born to Ray and Margaret Miller on May 24, 1928, in the Mozart district on NW 28-32-14. His ten-year-old sister Dora was the midwife. She always told him this story at every birthday when she would come with a birthday cake!
He attended Gardar School with his brothers Mike and Valdi. Later he moved to a neighbour family’s farm of Halldor Austiford, his wife and son Einar. There he attended school at Little Quill for a couple of years while working on the farm doing chores and helping to care for Einar’s mother. He became like a family member and always visited there until their passing.
He lived with Austiford’s until the fall of 1957 when he was asked to drive a truck from Leslie to Flin Flon for Magnus Eyolfson. He worked for Magnus in construction that first winter. The following summer he cut pulp for the Saskatchewan Government. He also worked for Carter Construction building roads from Cranberry Portage to Flin Flon before taking a position as shop foreman with Gardewine and Sons in Flin Flon, a transporting company from Winnipeg to Northern Manitoba including Flin Flon, Snow Lake and Thompson. He repaired all their semis at the shop but often had to drive out to rescue a semi having problems on the road. He held this position until June 1966.
Vic started attending the Pentecostal Church in Flin Flon and on October 26, 1958, he gave his heart to the Lord as recorded in his well-marked Bible by his pastor Rev. P. M. Munro. From that time his life was committed to his Lord and Saviour.
It was on January 17, 1960 when Vic met his wife-to-be Margaret Mahlum, when he was picking up children that Sunday morning in Creighton to take to Sunday School in Flin Flon. Margaret was babysitting for her hairdresser when Vic came to pick up Mrs. Neville’s two children. They started dating and were married on July 15, 1961 at the Fosston Evangelical Free Church by their pastor from Flin Flon.
After their marriage they continued to live in Creighton. In 1961 Vic bought a quarter of land in the Hendon district and from that time on he spent every summer at the farm staying with his mother-in-law. He was joined by his wife during school holidays. Then, in the summer of 1966, they purchased more land and they both resigned from their positions, moved their mobile home to the farm and lived there. In 1967 Vic started to build a home for his family and lived there for over 50 years. Besides farming, he built a shop where he did mechanic work calling it Vic’s Garage. In the late 70’s we owned and operated the Wadena Coin Laundry, selling it in 1982.
Vic was found at every Frontier Auction Sale in Wadena, working for his brother-in-law Milo, making sure all the equipment for sale would start and run. Sometimes potential buyers would pull wires, etc. so tractors wouldn’t start, and it would go cheaper but Vic always caught on to their tricks and remedied the situation.
He worked for P&H elevator one winter in 1988 alongside his son Blaine, on the maintenance crew repairing and moving an elevator. He also worked for Wheatbelt Sales repairing motors, etc. Besides this, he still had his own shop at the farm.
Vic served as a board member on the Hendon Credit Union when he first came to Hendon. He also represented the R.M. of Lakeview and was a board member of Weneeda Park Lodge. They joined the Wadena Baptist Church in 1971. Vic served on the church board for a number of years, helping with the construction of this church, taught adult Sunday School as well as helped at the Fishing Lake Bible Camp.
Vic and Margaret celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2011 with all their children and a quiet 60th anniversary July 15, 2021. They lived in Wadena for the past several years but spent the last three winters in Yorkton to be closer to their son Blaine and his family.
Vic was predeceased by both his parents, Ray and Margaret and all eleven of his siblings and their spouses except one: Allan (Ella), Ebert (Margaret), Rosie (Angie) McDonald, Winfield (Viola), Dora (Bertel) Pearson, Elmer, Mary Ann (Hughie) Attifeld, Magnus (Mike), Mary, Lorraine Griffith, Valdi, Conrad (in infancy). Elmer’s wife, Dorothy Miller (Saskatoon) is Vic’s remaining sister-in-law.
Vic is survived by his wife of 60 1/2 years, Margaret; his four children, Vicki Lee (Rolf) Hirch of Rolling Hills, AB, grandchildren Braden and Chelsea and great grandchildren Braelyn and Caleb; Blaine Kevin (Diane) Miller of Yorkton, SK and granddaughters Amy (Kade) and Emma; Brent Cory Miller of Airdrie, AB; Valerie Ann (Lee) Cottreau of Airdrie, AB and grandchildren Mason, Ashlyn and Brielle as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
Vic passed away peacefully in his sleep at 4:00 a.m. at Golden Acres Lodge in Wynyard on Saturday, January 22, 2022, where he resided since November 2021.
