Wilma Fenton

October 5, 1932 - February 27, 2016

Wilma Remona Salmond, born October 5, 1932, in Humboldt, was the youngest of Hugh and Ida Salmond's four children.
She started her life in the Verndale or Lake Lenore area, where her dad and mom were farming. In the '30s the drought started so the family moved, taking homestead in the High Tor area near Porcupine Plain. While growing up, Wilma spent a lot of her time helping her dad with the sheep, moving them a distance of about ten miles back and forth every spring and fall. Those trips proved to have many interesting episodes, some not so pleasant!
Wilma went to school at Cherry Blossom to grade 8. She went to work at the age of 14 doing housekeeping and then to Kelvington Hospital at 16 and continued working as an aide, casual until about 1965.
Wilma was a very experienced seamstress! She always made many outfits for Marlene, Colleen and herself for every occasion - Christmas, Easter or any special time. She continued her expertise for many years with all three of our graduation dresses as well as bridesmaid dresses.
On June 26, 1951, Wilma married the love of her life, Arthur William Fenton. They lived on the family farm, farming with Art's parents until they retired. They were blessed with four children: Marlene Louise, born in 1954; Colleen Ellen, born in 1956; Daryl Wayne, born in 1957; and last of all Michelle Lynn, born in 1968.
In June 1970, Art, Wilma and family moved to Fort Nelson, B.C. Wilma took care of the trailer park in which they lived and also did various jobs cleaning at the school and managing an apartment building. Her hobby fast became cake decorating!
In 1977, Art, Wilma and Michelle transferred to Calgary. There she also kept very busy, working at a bakery in the mall. After taking correspondence, she received her diploma as a nursing assistant and began working at a nursing home. She still continued making many wedding, anniversary and birthday cakes.
In May 1994, Art and Wilma chose to retire to Kelvington to be near some family. Wilma took up crocheting. (Probably many have some pieces of her beautiful work). They did a great deal of camping with family and friends, taking in many annual summer events as they followed the EPCCA pony circuit.
After Art's passing, Wilma moved into the Kelvington Legion Villa and with failing health upon her, she took residence in Kelvindell Lodge in 2013, where she resided until her passing. She was very happy in her new home and dearly loved everyone of "her girls" there!
Wilma was predeceased by Art, her loving husband of 57 years; parents, Hugh (1964) and Ida (1975); brothers, baby Lawrence and another brother Lawrence (1944); sister Naomi Waycheshen (2015); parents-in-law, Jim (1980) and Millie (2000); sister-in-law Norma Tangjerd (1977); and grandson-in-law Ray Schmuck (2013).
Left to mourn and cherish her loving memory are her children, Marlene and Dale Shirley, Colleen and Rod Splett, Daryl and Doreen Fenton, and Michelle and Art Waite; 13 grandchildren and 17 great- grandchildren: Pam Schmuck (Brian & Michael); Jason Shirley & Paula (Lucas Weisbrod); Lisa Shirley & Bart (Michalla & Ashton, & Jordan); Sheldon Shirley; Dana & Mark Heshka (Sierra).
